Leave 1-2 accumulator spring out on TH350?

Just pulled my TH350 out of a 79 GMC 2WD 1/2 ton pickup to replace a leaking O-ring on the 1-2 shift accumulator. Whenever I pulled the cover off the spring inside was in 6 pieces.

The parts man at a very reputable transmission specialty shop told me it was not necessary to replace the spring and it should be left out. This does not seem like the right thing to do but that is where you guys come in.

Should I leave this spring out?

By the way, the transmission seemed to be working properly when pulled. It just had a big leak.

It'll have a firmer 1-2 shift. Hasn't hurt anything in mine, been running that way for a couple of years anyway.

No big deal, I installed a B&M Transpak in a TH350 a while back and said to take it out. The purpose of the accumulator is to slow the shift down so it isn't harsh in grandma's car. Clutch apply will be faster, so less slippage=good.
