lengths of fuel pump rods

My friend has replaced his 283 out of his 57 Bel Air with a 350 Chevy. He reused the rod between the fuel pump and the cam lobe and the fuel pump. However when the new engine ran it made a tapping noise like a bad pump. So he replaced the old pump (which was from the old 283). The noise changed a little but didn't go away. My question is this:
Are there different length rods in different blocks? Or is it a one-size-fits-all situation with regards to this part?

Thanks

A guy I know who races Chevys, told me there are two different size push rods for SBC. He advised me that could have been my noise I had.Went to NAPA and got one of each. Didn't help in my case, but there are two different sizes. That was news to me.
