lifters won't stop ticking - help

I just finished building a sbc using a late model roller block and a ZZ4 factory roller cam and I can't get my lifters to stop ticking (ticks worse when hot). I am begining to think that my lifters are not the problem.

To let you know what I have done so far. I first assembled the moter with original (used) factory roller lifters and new zz4 cam. Adjusted lifters using "spin the pushrod method" w/ 1/2 turn preload. Engine was farily quiet at first but started ticking when it got hot.

Re-adusted lifters with engine hot and running by backing off rockers until rockers started clacking then tighteneing down until clacking stoped and then added 1/2 turn more preload. Could not get lifters to quiet all the way down.

Bought new Comp Cams High Energy lifters and repeated above adjustments with same results.

Tried cranking the comp cam lifters down to a total of 3/4 turn preload, no change.

What else could be causing my lifters to tick. It seems to be worse when it is hot.

Thanks, Litdavve

lifter tick

LitDave, how is your oil pressure? In your engine are there oil galley plugs?
Were they replaced and sealed? Was the oil pump replaced and is the drive
rod positioned correctly? It sounds as though the lifters are not receiving enough oil to fill and build pressure. If just one cylinder was noisy then it might be a bad lifter but for the whole bank to tick, it may be an oil pressure problem. good luck, Tim

Is it multi-point (i.e. TPI) fuel injected? While investigating my lifter ticking problem, I accidently learned I was actually hearing the injectors ticking, not the lifters. Use a stethescope or a length of heater hose and try to pinpoint the source. Good luck, Ed. www.edgesz28.com

Do you have headers? Is it an exhaust leak?
