Take a look at this thread as many of the shops show their lighting:

I have a selection of flourescent lights in mine. I have both 4' and 8' lights in there. The more lights you can get in there the better. You should also have them on several switches. That way you could have only some on, if that is all that is needed. There will also be some cases where you will be able to see with some of the lights off.

Whatever you put in...put in fluorescents. I had 16 incadescents in a 22 x 28 and could not see squat. The first move I did was to swap out the 4 corner lights with 500 watt halogens. Much brighter and way hotter. On a summer day it will be cool in the morning but kick on the lights and it heats up real fast. The next thing I did was to remove one bank of lights and put up two 8 foot fluorescents end to end (16' run) What a difference. I then added 4- 4' sections down a wall. Much, much better. Next thing on the to-do list is remove the rest of the incadescents and add three more rows of 16' runs on the ceiling. It will be as bright as being outside on a sunny day. And no heat from the bulbs. So whatever you do....go with fluorescents. You will be glad you did in the longrun.

Tanks to all !
and keep it coming.
I am looking at HO fluorescents! They are not cheep but start in the cold and last very long time and are very bright for only 54w.
Looking for layout?

Good thread some photos do not open wish I could see them all.

Kevin... If I lived in Ohio, I would have kept the halogen lights there. They work good for heat in the winter. :D

8' HO 220V Cold Start flourescents. My eyes are getting old and these provide plenty of light...
Spend the money on decent lights and you will be happier...

I have two rows of 4 foot flourecent lights. Each row has 4, 4 foot sections.

I still feel like there could be more light, but that's just me.

It all depends on the roof height. The eight foot high eff. and h/o are a great way to go but as you say are pricey. There is a new style of fluorescent and they come in banks of I believe six 4's. Two styles available for lower and higher ceilings. i would check with your local electrical wholesaler and see what they would suggest. Or if you know a contractor see what they are pulling out to reinstall the updated lighting. I installed 7 liquid 400wt and 6 eight foot h/o's and it cost me zero. Now I just have to update the paint booth. 50 year old eyes just don't cut it.

Hi and tanks
yes 50 is coming in months. But my eyes are fine I wont to see the detail! :mwink:
Liquid 400wt sounds HOT :pain: x7!
Local wants to do same old 8 fters I have at my shop and I know they don't cut it!
Light shop sed same thing these guys are stuck in the 70s.
I have found a nice 4ft HO I think I am going with looking for layout.
I think I am going in between the cars not over the roofs!

Going in between the cars is the way to go but I would go with the 8's if they are a dual bulb. If the 4's are a 5 or 6 bulb style then that will work fine also. Good luck.

I have 4' and 8' lights in mine. I would go with 8' if I put any more on the ceiling. There is a world of difference!

We share the same problem, it ain't the lights, it's the eyes. LOL
