Interesting thread.

In post #1 in the title you state Sprite and then say you are building a Midget.
I'm confused.
Are you building a AH Sprite or an MG Midget?

I'm doing a customer's Midget right now.

Ok since everyone is having fun here... what about a turbo diesel VW Engine. They have quite a lot in the way of performance upgrades and I bet you could get 50+ mpg.

Sorry, should read "Spridget", the two are nearly interchangable except this one is the 1500 series that i believe is a bit more sturdily built. I would love to see some pics of some of these swaps.

Being stuck on the trans choice is going to limit your choices, not that hard to make another trans fit so why limit yourself?

The 2.3L turbo from a later model T-bird is a natural choice and can be built to 350Hp and be reliable/streetable with little problems finding a donor car.

Everything else is more expensive and will require more fabrication/shoehorning.

Its always about money and time...

OK, it's been a while, but I was waiting to get these photos downloaded from a friend. We hit the Carlisle PA sports and import show back in May, and this is my new favorite 'stuffage' job of all time. A Mark 1 Sprite with an early 3.8 Jaguar motor leveraged under the hood. The only indications are a really well performed hood scoop, (looks like it's grafted from an early XKE) and the lettering on the rear of the rocker that says "Austin Healey, powered by Jaguar".
