Lincoln Mark VII computer question
I inherited a "Marlene" kit car. I am using the drive train from a 1988 Mark VII. The engine is a fuel injected 302 (5 Liter) V8. Do I need the Mark VII computer? I have the complete 1988 Mark VII. It was running before I took the engine, tranny etc out. Will it still run now in the Marlene without the computer?? If not what do I need to do. The Marlene definitely won't have all the computer driven "bells and whistles" the Lincoln has/had.
Thanks, Ralph Miller Dallas, Texas. |

re: Lincoln Mark VII computer question
Doc here,
Yes you need the computer .. Even bare bones..you need to tell the injectors when and how much to fire..and the dizzy to advance and retard..PLUS some engine monitoring devices are computer supported and won't run analog... Try and score the computer that came with that engine..If not you'll have to make a trip to the Bone yard, or order an aftermarket one and harness.. Also if smog is an issue where you live ..then it's a must. Doc

re: Lincoln Mark VII computer question
I recently finished up a 69 Mustang with an 89 Mk VII engine and trans with the original computer. You can strip the harness down to just 45 wires and eliminate all the bells and whistles. You need a wiring diagram to go by and eliminate all the extra stuff, then is just a regular EEC 4 system. Of course, it was easy for me since I worked at a Linc/Merc dealer as an electronics/driveability tech for 30 years.
Obviously, you want to eliminate the computer. You just need to convert the car to a carburetor and everything that goes with a pre-computed vehicle. I'm currently putting an 86 Ramcharger (2wd) drivetrain in my 59 Divco without the fuel injection. Going with and AFB and a Edelbrock intake. No smog on this car so its OK to do so here. re: Lincoln Mark VII computer question
Thanks guys! I have the computer so I guess I will use it. Found it hidden behind the funance and the refigerator in the passenger toe kick area right behind the glove box.
2-manytoyzs, If I need help on the wiring can you give me some guidance? Good luck on your project. Boy I really appreciate the quick response. I'm 69 years old and have been fooling with cars since I was 14, but I did want to cut out as much computer "stuff" as I could. This kit is a 1936 Mercedes clone so there is not much room for a lot of extras. Fortunately when I found the computer today I saw that it isn't too big. Thanks, again. Ralph |

re: Lincoln Mark VII computer question
-Installation Guide For FRP M-12071-C302 EFI Harness-
This booklet is available and will give you insight as to how to modify your origional harness. Also be advised that removing the emission features from the origional ECM, it may have to be reflashed to prevent MIL lamp illumination. It's only five bucks...just like a sore chicken, you can't beat it... ![]() ![]() ![]() |
