Listing Material?

I'm coming towards the end of my first major practice project with the 1970 Cadillac drivers seat back. The next thing is the listing. What should I use for it?

I use pre-made Typar listings that come in large rolls. Typar is the same thing Tyvek house wrap is made from. I keep 3 different sizes on hand, 1" 1 1/2" and 2" wide listings with cord sewn into them. If I don't need the cord I just take it out. The cord is sewn in with a chain stitch, so it comes out very easily.

You can really use almost any reasonably durable fabric. Denim decking material works fine, as does Versare.

I can't figure out what the original stuff was made out of. Does Perfectfit sell ?Typar?

The original on your seats was probably made from denim decking. Perfect fit has typar listing: CLICK HERE

Here's a picture of the original stuff. It measures 1 1/4 inches

Yes, that's denim decking material, or at least that's what I call it. You can make your own if you want, it can be made out of just about anything that will hold a hog ring. Did it have wires in it?

Yep, it had wires in it. What about making it from a pair of old blue jeans?

DanTwoLakes 12-08-2010 06:59 PM

It doesn't need to be that thick. You're thinking of a different type of denim. I'm talking about the kind of denim used for decking material under seat cushions on a couch, not the kind of denim used to make blue jeans.

UPS dropped it off yesterday. This is one tough material. Is this stuff a polymer?

DanTwoLakes 01-26-2011 09:17 AM

Typar is made from polypropylene, which is a thermoplastic polymer. It has 33 lbs of tear strength.

Coodeville 01-26-2011 12:39 PM

It seems like real tough stuff and it won't rot either.

DanTwoLakes 01-26-2011 01:15 PM

Right you are, it's tough as nails and won't rot in any way. Earlier in this thread, I said that Typar and Tyvek house wrap were made of the same thing. While that is true, they both are made from polypropylene, Typar is 5 times tougher than Tyvek.
