a little dull

To make a long story short, my son buffed his finder with buffing compound, now about 1/3 of the lower fender is dull, no waxing or buffing compound will get it to shine like the rest of the fender, I think he buffed the clear coat right out of it, question is, can he lightly sand the whole finder and then I will shoot a clear coat over it. The paint job a in excelent shape, except for this. It's on a 1999 Audi, How could i go about it?????

A simple test test would be to sand with some 1500 and SEE if it's COLOR or CLEAR residue on the paper.
If it comes up color, then you need to rebase it and reclear it.
If it comes out clear,Then you just have buffing issues and need to keep at it.

If it's a solid color, "maybe" but once you cut thru,it's a gamble how thick the base is and it's ALWAYS best to rebase, even just dust some on and clear.
you can always rebase it and after it flash's off, wipe some g&wr or mineral spirits on it and roll it out in the sun and SEE and then wipe down, let it dry and reclear.
If this is a metallic,it's a no brainer. It WILL have to be dusted.
