a little help on a timing light

im learning as i go.and have always set my timing by listening to the change.i know thats not even close to being perfect timing.so i bought a timing light my first.and it is used with no instructions.it is a older craftsmen it has three wires coming from it.and i got a adapter that goes to plug and plug wire.i just dont know how to use it.if any body can explain it .i would be very grateful thanks if u will help guys.im just ignorant when it comes to timing thats all

Put the adapter on the number one plug and clip the blue wire to the adapter, connect the spark plug wire to the adapter. Connect the red to the positive terminal and the black to the block or a good ground (negative terminal works too! )

Once you get it hooked up as 4Jaws stated MAKE SURE the wires are out of the way of the fan, etc . Crank motor ,if the light has a trigger when you press it and if all is hooked up right and working you will see the light flashing. Then point it at the timiing marks and watch the crank mark. If you can't see them real well I use white chalk to mark them before I start to help see them . HTH

If you have a vacuum advance on the distributer, you have to disconnect the vacuum line and plug it to check timing.
