Hello. Im shopping for a new transmission, and I've come across "Lock Up or Non-Lock Up". What exactly is this? My understanding is lockup is better on fuel, becuase of less slippage on the highway?

1988 Cutlass Supreme with the factory 200-4r transmission. Would that be lock up, or no? And Does the converter dictate lockup, or the transmission?

Thank you.

The 200-R4 uses a lockup converter, and yes the lockup will reduce slippage when engaged. You will see about 200 to 300 fewer rpms when locked.
A non lockup converter can be used, but I don't recall if modifications to the trans has to be done to run it. One of the trans experts will be able to tell you.
