Long Block Vs. Short Block
What are the differences between a 350 chevy long block or short block ? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to either for hot rod application?

A long block is a engine with the heads already installed ...
A short block does not come with the heads. |

Long Block above ... Short block above ... The term long block and short block have nothing to do with the length of the engine. It has to do with the completeness of the engine. This a complete engine ... less the carburetor, fuel pump, starter and the ignition wires. It is the ZZ4 HO crate engine from Chevrolet. |

If you already have good heads and intake, you can reuse them. I was able to purchase a short block 383, with my choice of cam and pistons installed, for what I considered a reasonable price, from Kent @ the enginestore.com. He did the machining I requested and used the brand of parts I specified. I checked clearances when I received the block - dead nuts on. Bolted my heads, intake, headers, and distributor on, and have been most satisfied! |

Find your engine or parts here
The general difference among them is that a long block is as close to full engine assembly, ready to run whereas the short-block is normally seen as the assembly that will be rebuilt when an engine is overhauled

In simple automotive "English", a "short block" has no heads, timing cover or oil pan. A "long block" has heads, and where appropriate, rockers and pushrods. A "complete" engine has an intake manifold, covers and a pan installed. These terms come from the "rebuilder" crowd, with beginings in the '40s, anyway, maybe older.
