looking for a 48'' rear axle

i have a 73 nova with the stock 10 bolt 8.5'' rear that measures 55.5'' from backplate to backplate. im doing a minitub on it and im looking for for a rear end out of a vehicle thats "about" 48'' backplate to backplate. so i dont have to chop up and modify mine. i dont necessarily care what make of rear end...chevy or ford but as long as it's comparable in strength to a 10-bolt or prefferably better. im not too worried about the location of the spring perches as it wouldnt be that big of a deal too have those relocated. anyone know of a vehicle with that measurement rear end? i know of the rare 8.5'' 10-bolt s-10 rear that will work but they are hard to find. thanks for the help.

May not be the answer you are looking for. I bought a Dana 60 out of a 3/4 ton dodge for $60.00 some Moroso axle ends $35.00 and a set of Moser axles $400.00 and a posi from Ebay $80.00 I now have a bullet proof rear end. At least for what I wanted. I was able to narrow it myself. Just giving you something to think about as an option.

For brakes I used 66 vette rotors $35.00 each 70 impala calipers $35.00 each and 2 weld on brackets from Speedway. $10.00 each.

So for less than $800 I have a great rear end in my T Bucket.

First ... let me tell you the correct way to measure a rear end width ...

Most knowledgeable rodders do it the above way. All the internet sites that list rear end widths also measure that way ... The reason is that brake drums will vary in width from 1 and 3/4 inches to 3 inches wide. That much difference will really mess up comparing rear ends ... to other rear ends.

If you really want to go to the trouble of a narrowed rear end ... I suggest going to a 9 inch Ford. They are easy to narrow ... strong ... and have great parts availability from the aftermarket.

Moser will narrow axles for $110 a pair ... and narrow a housing for another $110 ... so for less than $250 you can have the rear end width you want after you come up with a 9 inch Ford core.
