looking to find aftermarket or repro center caps for iroc rims

Does anybody know where I can find aftermarket/reproduction iroc camaro centercaps ('88)?

I think the price through GM is high, for all the more you get. it was like 35 bucks each for the plastic towers, and another 18 bucks each for the emblem peice.

I have tried salvage yards around here but nobody has anything, and they all said that if they did, I'd have to buy the rims and all.

Also, while cleaning these wheels up, I noticed something that looked a little like some kind of clearcoat on them. Is that what it is? I was planning to custom paint these wheels, and I was going to strip them first, then sand the alumimun lightly with a very fine paper.

i used to have an 87 and lost one of these. i just replaced it from the dealer. now its been a long time but from what i remember on the back side there is tabs along the outer edge that snap into the rim. problem i found was the plastic gets old and brittle and when you remove them the tabs crack and break off then wont hold tight into the rim and it just flies off. if you were to find an old one i think you would be lucky if it actually stayed on the rim. your probably going to be better off biting the bullet and spend the $50 on the emblem. even if you found a used one for 25 you really arent saving anything if you end up buying it twice!!

Ya I know, the old ones that I got with the wheels, ( only got 3) , are brittle, I don't think they will look very good on a newly custom painted wheel. I was doing a little hunting of my own after I posted this, and found a site called www.ehubcap.com (ya, now I've seen it all lol) they have reproduction, and used, I think it said the new reproduction was availiable in chrome, silver, or black, and they were 22 bucks each, complete. Maybey I won't have to bite the bullet so hard this time.

Yes, they do have a clear coat.

since they have a clearcoat on them, would it hurt the aluminum to use paint stripper on them? I really don't want them blasted, as I want the aluminum smooth. or would it be better to just sand them lightly to smooth them, then paint?

i stripped mine to bare aluminum then used to use the mag clener (phosphoric acid) on them and they got real bright. dull finish but bright. i remember when i stripped the paint off them i couldn't believe how much was on there. all the painted areas were really rough castings and the paint actually filled it all in making them look somewhat smooth. what a suprise when i got it all off. really rough. not bad looking but not what i expected. it is enough where you will probably need to epoxy the wheels then poly prime them and sand to flatten everything out before paint.
