looking to find-out what the gears are in rear of 57 Chevy

I'm looking to find-out what the gears are on the limited slip rear I have on my 57 Chevy.

The rear-end differential has the following stamping: 1249516. It also has GM12 on the other side.

I could really use the help.

Thanks

rotate drive shaft.

jack up both wheels. ,,put it on jackstands. Chalk mark the tires and drive shaft , then turn the drive shaft and count how many turns to get BOTH tires to turn over ONE time then do the math , If a non limited slip. block one wheel so it wont turn then count how many turns on the drive shaft to get ONE tire to turn over TWO times

Thanks for the input.

What gear ratio would work better overall a 3.73 or 4.11

Best ??

Best depends on a lot of things. What size of rear tires. how will the car be used or raced, What is the torque curve of the engine, what are the trans gear ratios.

A simple answer: 4.11 would give more torque, fast startup, but the top speed a every gear would be 10% more with 3.73. So for stock and daily drive, i would go for 3.73.
