Looking to prevent rust rag

I have a 1977 olds 442, it came with a full vinyl top. Due to rust have I have replaced one quarter panel and working on patches on the other. Whenever I get there I will be reinstalling the vinyl top. I have been thinking that unless I can do something I might one day be doing the same repairs. To prevent this could one put a thin coat of fiberglass resin on the top before installing the vinyl top. When I think about it seems like it would create a barrier. But would like to know what some of you think.

I'd paint it like it didn't have a vinyl roof, the 77 cutlass has a half vinyl roof, it stops at the doors.. "s"/442 etc all came with only half vinyl

Epoxy primer and paint That way it'll last no matter what you do, those tops will rust out a roof I think I'd leave it off too.

Good advice Mike, just so the OP knows...If your going to go to the trouble of re-installing a vinyl roof, make sure that any and all rust is gone from underneath the existing vinyl. Sandblast, scratch, claw, replace metal, whatever it takes to get ride of any rust...even if you only have little bubbles, open them up, get rid of the rust and then Epoxy Prime.

I also agree, why replace the vinyl roof once you have it off? I like non vinyl for a roof...but your car, you do what you like.
