loose HEI pickup coil

Had my HEI apart to fix the advance, I noticed the pickup coil had some free play. The coil plastic shell is keyed to fit into the unit, but the keyway is larger and allows more than 1/32" of rotation. Is that normal? I know it's not much movement, but seems that it could potentially cause engine vibration, no?

Thanks,
-Michael

To answer my own question, it turned out that the loose coil was causing some rough engine operation. Being cheap I didn't want to spring for a new coil since this one worked... so I put a dot of silicone in the keyway to keep the coil secured to its housing. I had forgotten that the pickup coil moves with the vacuum advance, so that extra 1/16" free play was a problem. Accelerates MUCH smoother now, and just glides down the highway.

Odd problem, I might have never found it either. of course something as crazy as a loose coil would only happen to me
