loose steering?

what do i need to repair/replace if my steering is loose and the car doesnt handle the way it used to. it is a 79 firebird formula

Depends on what it is or isn't doing any longer. Wandering, bouncing, pulling to either side, clunks, wobbles, excessive wheel play...

In some cases steering box can be adjusted to reduce play.

Check each steering component for play and replace all worn parts.

When checking suspension components, jack the front end off the ground and try moving the tire back and forth and in and out (top and bottom) for play.

Check ball joints, while in the air (on jack stands of course), lift the tire to see if there's up and down loose play.
