Unhappy losing dwell and burning plugs

I have a '63 Olds with a 394ci engine. I am having trouble latley with losing my dwell and burning up spark plugs. I replace the rotor and dist. cap, put in new plugs and about 30 miles later it seems to be doing the same thing. The car won't run, I am going out to get the car right now to bring the car home. Does anyone have any suggestions to what is going on??? <img src="graemlins/sweat.gif" border="0" alt="[sweat]" />

Sounds like your distributor shaft is worn out. Take the cap off and try to move the rotor shaft back and forth. If it moves at all, the bushings are worn and you should get a new distributor, 'cause you will never be able to set the points wiht a worn out shaft.

If the distributor fails the test willys gave you maybe it's a good time to convert to electronic ignition . I would think there must be a conversion kit for that from someone. I started having trouble with the points distributor in my mustang almost same as you. Every time I brought her rpm's up off idle my dwell meter would start jumping all over. Switched to a Mallory Unilite and goodbye problems.
