Lots of pounding with air shocks
I took the lowering blocks off my 37 chevy, as the suspension was below the rim line because of them.........the sedan came up about 1 1/2 inches . Someone conviced me to go with air shocks, and I have been trying to adjust the air pressure to give a decent ride. Nothing but pounding when I hit even a small bump. I'm about ready to go to a good conventional shock, and was wondering if you guys have any suggestions on what manufacturer and type ? It's a 37 Chevy 2 door sedan.
There shouldn't be any problem with air shocks...I'd have used them myself probably, if you like to carry loads and go travelling.
Something's hitting something, or broke. You might have to get under there with the grandkids jumping up-and-down in the trunk and find what's going on.
edit: Also be sure the shocks are somewhere around the middle of their travel at rest, and don't bottom out before the bump stops. You likely have to take one out and measure it at extension and fully compressed, then compare measurements at the suspension mounting points, in order to do that. Of course air shocks add some load to the mounts so they'll need to be tough enough to take it.
You will never get a ride as nice as conventional shocks with an air shock. Yes, take them out and replace with a good Monroe unit. Usually the more expensive the shock in the Monroe line, the stiffer the dampening. In other words, if you want a soft ride go with the less expensive Monroe shock.
Do check and make sure nothing is hitting though, but if you just raised the car 1 1/2" that shouldn't be a problem.
Never seen a air shock give a good ride,,,, Left them alone back in my teen years,,, Never did like them...
