Low Oil pressure advice.

hi all since i had my 454 engine rebuilt it has had low oil pressure when it warms up.
it gos up to about 60 to 70 psi when its reving at temp.
and when its cold it has at an idle 20 to 30 psi but when it warms up its only got about 5 to 7 psi.
someone told me that the mains have too much clearance in them.
could this be the problem.
or could the spring in the pump get weak when it warms up.
befor i had it rebuilt it had at least 25-40 psi at an idle warm with the same kind of pump.
it is a new pump and it is a hi volume pump but what ever the problem is its got me worried.
any info on this matter would be great.
thanks Ken.

pump screen

If you drive down the hi-way and the pressure creeps down I bet the pickup fell off. Mine would be fine cold and down the road but on the hi-way it would creep down if I got into it it would go from 35 to 20 pretty fast.

Hi Ken,
It' sounds as if there may be excessive clearances,
Curtis73es, question needs to be answered as well, also
how many miles/time on this engine since rebuild?
Take care,
rich

We have seen motors run as low as 3 or 4 lbs, after they have a full heat sink. It looks horrible, but the motors keep on running. One blown 454, we took it back out, and had the machine shop go completely back through it, and it did the same thing. That motor is still running with no adverse effects. Crazy, but true.
Also not all gauges read the same.
I have run 50W. oil in some of them. It helps.

I had the engine rebuilt in January this year.
they said they just polished the crank,
so i was thinking that there might be a little too much clearance in the mains.
this is the first time i had someone else put a motor together for me.
the price was right.
he did the bottom end and i did the rest.
i have only about 300 miles of cruising around and about 15 passes at the 1/8th mile track on it so its still pretty fresh.

Usual suspect for this is excessive bearing clearance. It doesn't take much, either.
