low oil pressure & ticking

I have a 350 sbc & oil pressure is at 5psi during idle & 20psi at cruising. I have lifter noise, and there isnt any oiling under the valve covers except at high rpm. The motor is a fresh rebuild done seven years ago & wasn't started till recently. The builder used lithium grease in it, and I had to change oil 5 times during break in to rid of the lithium in my filter. Finally I sea-foamed the motor which cleaned up the lithium, but still no oil pressure. I installed a new gauge, and at idle the dummy light flickers.

Is your oil pressure gage electrical, or mechanical?

If you have confirmed the lo oil pressure numbers I would not run the engine any longer until i discovered the cause. I have never heard of anyone using lithium as an engine pre lube, makes me wonder what else was done to the engine during assembly.

Back in the 60s we used white lithium grease all the time to assemble engines, so that shouldnt be a problem, unless he filled the crankcase with the stuff. Maybe that is what has happened. The grease has clogged the oil pump. Take the pan off and check it out.

low oil pressure

I have both mechanical & electric. I am in the process of pulling the motor & taking the pan off to see if the pump is full of grease. Thanks

Yep, Lithium grease was a favorite in my day too. Cept back then we didn't know that the melting point as a few hundred degrees above the normal oil temp, so the crap never melted in, just got pushed around and sometimes clogged things up.

Ck to make sure that the front oil galley plugs are in, the ones behind the cam sprocket.

Sounds like it could also have some really big clearances too. Ck it good, hate to see ya trash a new engine.
