Low rpm miss

Today at work a coworker asked me to take a look at his car. Its a 84 el camino with a stock 305 except it has smog legal headers. It idles very rough. I tried to hold it at 2500 to see if it would go away and it didn't rant to rev and bog down while doing this in park. I messed with the adjustment on the the carb and it idled a little better.I held it at 1k and the needle jumped around like it was missing then held it at 2k and it was fine. the carb is a remand quadrajet. I couldn't check the timing as i didn't have my light with me but I will do it tomorrow. Does anyone know what else I should look at? any help is greatly appreciated.

Check the centrifugal advance mechanism (if it has one) for worn and/or sticking parts. Then there's always the phantom vacuum leak.
