Low throttle wants to die

62 ford 352 stock. Cold starts and idles fine, low throttle easing out of a stop causes back fire and hesitation. More throttle and WOT car runs smooth. Deceleration is fine. When I disconnect vacuum advance hose the exact opposite happens, low throttle is smooth, high throttle back fires and hesitation. Timing is at 8* per factory specs.
Any thoughts?
