lower control arms
i have an 87 s10 i have been building from the ground up. i installed new urethane bushings and new ball joints. now i have noticed that they do not match(lower control arms) and one is very pitted from rust(when i installed them they were all i had at the time) and one is letting the truck set 1/2 inch higher :confused: . now my ? is, is there a trick to get the ball joints out and reusing them? as for bushings they shouldn't be a problem, unless anyone has a suggestion :)

I was doing ball joints here in the shop not too long ago and after installing the new ones I found a crack in the lower control arm. I had one of the Boilermakers weld a 2 1/2" piece of pipe(diameter just enough to rest on the edge of the ball joint) to a piece of 3/8" plate cut to a near triangle shape so it would sit level in the space I had to work with and get a straight shot on it and used a hydraulic press to push it back out.

I don't have my camera with me tonight but if you want I'll bring it tomorrow and try to post some pics...

Are you sure you still have both coil spring isolators in the frame spring buckets? If you lost one that end would sit lower.

i have no isolators on either side, just something to cause rust. i guess i could use one on the lower side though.

I put the pics of the tool I made for seating ball joints in the lower control arm on a newer model F-150 in my album.

I made this because the regular press would not pull the new ball joint into the control arm properly. I was told to set a piece of flat bar on top of the control arm and try, but the bar sat at a bad angle and didn't look too safe. I set this one(in the pics) on top of the lower control arm and used the press to pull the ball joint into place. The small piece of pipe welded on top keeps the clamp from shifting and the big one on the bottom sets over the hole.

I can't find the one I made to push the ball joints out with but it was the same except the bottom pipe was smaller in diameter and about 2" long. Using the ball joint press it will push the ball joint out without damaging it.
