Lowered truck with headers?
 
My 82 GMC Sierra has long tube headers and I'm wanting to lower the truck 4/5. That would leave me with about 3-4 inches of clearance between the bottom of the headers and the road. This isn't a daily driver, but even just as a street rod toy I'm afraid that might not be enough clearance. What do you guys think?

Would it be pretty simple to have some long tube headers fabricated, that will not hang below the frame as much?

For performance reasons, I don't really want to switch to shorty headers.

My 90 Sierra is pretty low and it has a 502 in it with BIG Headers. One pipe on the drivers side sits really low. They modified it a bit and I've never hit it even driving off and on trailers and a car carrier. I think mainly because the lowest part is right behind the front tire so a speed bump for example isnt a problem because the header goes up while the tire goes over it.

It's not pretty but let me see if I can find a pic...

I cut those side exhaust pipes and tips off you see in the second pic about 5 minutes after I took that picture because my low spot was actually behind the muffler

Thanks for the help, the lowest part of my headers are also towards the front tires I think, so it may not be a big issue.

Here is one pic I have of it, not sure if you can see much though.

My best suggestion is to lower the front so you have 4 inches of clearance between the bottom of the headers and the road. I might even weld in some guards in front of the tubes using 1/4 inch material and coming down off the frame to prevent damage from rocks and such. . Custom headers will cost $1,000. :eek:

Just as reference, my car had about 3 3/4" clearance at the lowest point and it would scrape like hell over any decent size speed bump.

Thanks, I guess I need to figure out if my lowest parts are close enough to the front tires that it will go over things better, like ProstreetRob was mentioning.

Speed bumps will be your worst enemy here. Seeing as most are the skinny ones, they are only like 7 inches long or somewhere around that. So unless your headers are exactly even with your tires you will most likely have a problem. I know you said you didn't want them, but shorties would be your best, easiest, and most worry free solution. You can try to modify your long tubes if you want by shortening the primaries in the straightest, most vertical place possible but it will be a huge pain and you will have to worry about how close they are to the body. The performance difference from long tubes to shorties will only be seen on a dyno and will be a very small number. You won't notice any difference in power between the two just from driving it. Plus shorties are cheap anyway, like $150 for the set.

The goal with a lowered car or truck is to keep everything tucked up above the frame. The frame can take a hit from a speed bump without problem, your headers, oil pan, etc cannot.

Right now, it's true duals, 2 unconnected pipes with 2 flowmaster super 10's, turned down under the cab. 2.5 inch pipes.

Indeed, it is haha. My whole cab rattles, but I like it.

It's definitely fun for a while. I've been running stock manifolds just dumped under the floor. It's horrible. It gets old really fast when it's your daily:rolleyes:

Yeah, on a daily I guess it would be a bit different.

Also, are block hugger headers the same thing as shorties, or are they different?
