M5OD-R2 VSS- cable speedo possible?

I'm going to be moth balling the 460 and I'm going to pick up a 300 I6 and M5OD-R2 5spd ( used in 300/302 F150's '88-'96 ) for my hotrod. I could go ither or, but want to make sure at the very least that the Ford VSS signal will work with aftermarket gauges... Or, could I take the cable drive setup from an M5OD-R2 out of a 1989-1994 Ford Ranger as they used cables? or would it have to be from the '88-'92 M5OD-R2?

The trans I have access to is from a '94 F-150 and is VSS speedo signal. '88-'91 were the only years M5OD-R2's were cable drive, and they were an option up from the T-18, so sort of hard to find.

on the ford vss, they are already set up for a speedo cable. inside where the cable would go is a white plastic "cap" inside. remove it. the cable will go right in. only problem is the lock (metal locking clip) that holds it in. they typically dont come with it when its setup from the factory without the cable. an older (86-88 truck) vss should come with the lock.

Is there a factory part number for the lock? in case I can't find one in a JY.

Will the M5OD-R1 ( Ford Ranger ) have the right lock ring? being '89-'94 were cable speedo?

it is the same vss between the 2 transmissions. at most, only the speedo gear is different.

Thanks. Easier to find a cable driven Ranger than a cable driven F-150
