Post magnet in gas tank

Hi guys. Usually I just lurk around here, but now I have a question:
Using suggestions from Willys36 I pulled my gas tanks the other day to clean them out. One had a magnet in it- w/a large (like costco muffin size) collection of shavings on it. Some of them had started to break loose and were in the pickup tube (no sock).

Anyone done this before and /or any opinions on if I should leave it in? At this point I'm leaning towards taking it out but I'd prefer an educated opinion. So far web searches turn up nada.
Thanks,
Ed

re: magnet in gas tank

I'd never heard of a magnet in the gas tank, but it makes sense. It is a common practice to place magnets in the oil pan to catch minute metal particles. We even have magnetized oil drain plugs now. The magnet in the gas tank would serve to trap rust particles I suspect.

I don't think it is anything to worry about. Probably one of those gas mileage gimmicks.

re: magnet in gas tank

There was a magnet inside my diff. placed there by the factory,
it was glued to the diff cover.
I just bought two filter mags one for the motor and one for the cannister filter I added to the trans.
Where do metal shavings come from in a gas tank?
If anything the shavings should become magnetised as well
and not flake off.
Clean the magnet and put it back then add a sock to the pickup tube.

From rust, either from your tank, the storage tank, or the delivery truck.

My daughter works at Costco and those muffins are BIG! Do you have a hole in your tank big enough to get the thing out? My most nagging question is, how do that many metal shavings get into a gas tank in the first place!?! Regardless, it couldn't hurt to have it in there, especially if you have a metal shavings problem!

re: magnet in gas tank

it was that big with SHAVINGS! the actual magnet is only about 2" square. It's really friggin strong too - maybe I can grab it with tongs to clean it off. Got most of the crap off it. It's a Utah truck and that tank sat empty for a while til I bought it.

my pickup tube is really just a brass outlet in the bottom of the tank. Is there a better setup I should change over to? There's no tubing extending into the tank to put a sock on.

re: magnet in gas tank

Hey I'm not from Utah! I grew up in Phelan- the other side of that dirt lot you're in!

Now I'm in Monrovia. It was just hard to find a J10 pickup in decent shape for under 4k down here.

btw- NICE Ride! My gf and I were drooling.
How many kids did you have to sell to finance it?

re: magnet in gas tank

The magnet,if it is as strong as you say, will be hard to pull off
with tongs. This magnet idea is great as long as the shavings areŽnt aluminum.
