main bearing end caps 12 bolt

Bought a 12 bolt housings off of craigslist awhile back. it will be going into my 70 el camino. it did not have the main bearing caps. i am doing all kinds of research before i buy anything. i can not find the main bearing caps anywhere tho. i found a set on summit but they said they require machine work. they are billet aluminum.

where can i find main bearing caps for a 12 bolt.

here is the one from summit. . .

You are probably not going to find any that don't need machining. These are fitted caps just like an engine block or connecting rod caps. They are finish machined as an assembly. Like Richard said, Mark Williams, Moser, Strange, Randy's Ring and Pinion. They will require machining to fit.

Looks like your cheap empty 12-bolt is now going to cost you as much as buying a new ready to assemble aftermarket bare housing .

One has to ask, who would sell an axle housing without bearing caps....further still, who would buy one . I hope you gave the guy a negative rating...this is unless you knew it did not have bearing caps.

i knew it didnt have them. plus the housing with drum brakes was only 200 bucks. after i loaded it up the guy said oh take these gave me a series 2 case 2.56 gears and a cover plate so i figure ill sell the other parts and the housing will be nearly free.

machine work for that cant be all the much can it?

It isn't a hard job. Take the empty housing and the caps to a friendly local tool & die-type machine shop, or if you know someone with a Bridgeport mill in their home shop. The caps get bolted to the housing and then measured for how far out of round the bearing hole is. It will intentionally be oval and oversize. Once the amount out of round is determined, the caps are pulled and machined acrossed the mating surface so that when re-installed the bores will be round. The legs on the caps are left slightly long to allow for this "matching". I would guess a $100-150 job unless you know someone, maybe less if you find a back yard. shop near you.

Don't expect the 2 series case and gears to be worth much more than scrap price, that's why they were thrown in to "sweeten" the deal.

You might pay $125ish for the housing work.
