you mean camel hump heads from 1969? trhe power paks were gone with the 283 era. need more info on your combo, is the intake a single or dual plane? what cfm is the carb? how many miles are on it? what cam does it have? what`s the rear gear ratio? what`s the ignition timing set at? what kind of igntion system? what kind of exhaust? what are the head casting numbers?

i would start by getting rid of the points dist.

then get some headers and good mufflers...

then you can regear the rear...

maybe a differant cam after the above...

first off I`d check the spark timing, it should be set at 12 degree`s before top dead center, with 38 degree`s total advance all in by 3000 RPM, the springs and weights in the distributor dictate how fast the advance comes in, do this setting with the vacuum advance pulled off and plugged, when you reconnect it, make sure it`s connected to a ported source, or one that pulls vacuum off idle and not at idle. if the engine detonates, slow the timing down 2 degree`s at a time until it stops, then it`s set.
