I am making a full custom interior for a chevelle. I am using leather and new sport foam. So obviously there are no previous covers to get my pattern from. I have already made the patterns for the inserts and the side panels. I am hung up on the top piece. I cant get anything to lay right to get a pattern made or anything even close. Any ideas would help so much!
Just use any stretchy cheap vinyl to make your pattern, transfer the pattern to cardboard, make a prototype to check for fit, tweak the cardboard pattern until you get the seat cover to fit, and then do the final seat. Almost nobody can make a custom cover correctly the first time, it takes adjustments to get the seat covers just so. We used to make fabric patterns from cheap plaid fabric to make sure everything was straight and square.
Remember that leather stretches like crazy in all directions. What fits made in vinyl may not do the same in leather.
I'm no pro here, but whenever I need to cut out a pattern for an interior panel I use clear vinyl, lay it over the area, draw my design with a permanent marker then adhere the vinyl to the chipboard and cut it out. I've been doing it a little with my seat project, it's worked. Don't know if that would help you at all. Good luck.
Thank you Dan and Invalid-
I really appreciate the actual help and ideas instead of the silly first reply. The thing I was most struggling with was the specific "angles" and how to make the panel tight everywhere and "bunching" at the top where all the pieces meet. I did however finally figure it out... Like always I was making it harder than it actually was. Thank you both again-
