making front drum into front disc.....?

Hey guys.

I hate suspensions, so i have no idea what i am doing. But, driving my 1968 ford f-100 pickup in traffic with all around drum brakes will scare the pants off anyone.

i want to make the front drums, at least, into front disc brakes. the only thing is im not sure which similar truck i can get spindles from that will work on my ford. I have heard that spindles from an I-beam 90's f-150 would work, but i would prefer some more experienced advice.

Any recommendations?

Thanks guys,
J

I would have to do some checking but since Ford did not change things too much I would think that is correct..If you can get your hands on a later spindle and measure the gap where the axle end goes and the kingpin diameter it would tell the tale..That may be the best bet..

You will also need to change the master cylinder to the later disk drum version and replumb the brake lines accordingly..

You will also need a proportioning valve.

If your brake drums & shoes are not all worn out, you really ought to try a vacuum brake booster first. You will have to put one on with discs anyways due to discs needing more pressure.

I have done a lot of 60's GM pickups with just a booster. They will put you through the windshield.........unless you run through 3 feet of water,or overheat them with heavy loads and hills.
