Mallory Unilite Ignition System

I have a street rod with a mild Chevy 350 V8 (275-300hp). I have a Mallory
Unilite distributor. It was recommended that I use a MAL-29219 coil since no
ballast resister was needed. I got it and after around 45 minutes with the
key on (engine not running) the coil heated up, cracked, and all the oil leaked out. Sheesh.

What is up with this? Anyone had this problem? Any recommendations since I obviously will have to get another coil and maybe ballast resistor? Thanks.

The last decent Mallory ignition I owned was back in 1970 and it was a dual point. Sorry for your trouble, but I would cut my losses and go with an MSD.

Doc here,

Agreed..Toss it and go to a GM type HEI...For a mild street rod it will perform very well, last forever, and replacement parts are totally affordable and abundant..

The reason the Coil burned up most likely is it probably was a border~line OBF when you installed it, AND to leave any coil on for 45 minutes not running with the points Closed is pushing the envelope.

Essentially with the Power on and the points closed, your coil is a (on a high performance coil) heating element..or large heat sink. You have a primary voltage (with no resistance for ballast) of 12 volts, through a coil of wire that has a resistance of about 0.6 ohms..or a 20 amp heater to ground.

Next time you need the power on for that long, disconnect (or pull the fuse if so equipped) to the coil + side, and that won't happen.

If you go to the HEI system, about the only thing you need to do to make it a bit better, Is toss the old epoxy coil and install an oil filled one. It will help keep the temps down on the HEI body (module) and cap..

I have same set up, should I change?

I have a mild 350 SBC with a Mallory Unilite distributor with magnetic pickup. It also has a ballast resistor and a chrome ( dont know mfg) coil. I am installing a EZ wire harness. The harness has wiring instructions for this set up. What do you recomend switching too DOC? Please be parts specific. This is my weak spot. I may also need a diagram please. Also for a SBC in a 36 Ford pickup I would think it would have more nuts. Will this distributor swap help that?

Doc here,

For a MILD street rod..or weekend warrior..non strip Cruiser..

Just get a STOCK pre 1980 (non confuser) HEI distributer, they all will fit the engine.. either order new about $200 bucks, or one can be had from a bone yard for around $25 bucks..

(put a new Cap, rotor, coil, module and pickup in it and check the end play if from the bone yard)

The wire is easy..One 12 gauge wire from the Ignition switch to the "BATT" terminal on the cap.., one to the tach (if used) from the "TACH" terminal and your done!
