Man the kids are gonna be ticked in the morning!

Got home from work tonight and the wifey left a post-it on the PC moniter that says "Check DSL,Router,or Network Card"
I woke her up and asked her what it was for...She says that we had a bad storm and lightning hit close, popped the surge protector and DSL wouldn't work... Dicked around with the computer and came to the conclusion that my new Linksys Router bit the dust along with 1 of my cooling fans for the PC case. I haven't check the kids PC yet but hopefully it won't have any damage. Had to re-install DSL and bypass the router(no net for the kids)
Time to call homeowners insurance I guess...build a new PC and retire this one to the Garage...
Later,
WEIMER

Saw that storm on Monday Night Football last night some really severe lightning. They even call off the game in the third quarter. it was just preseason anyway.

Lightning is one of those things like death and taxes. You can't hide from it

Weimer, before you scrap the router, chek for a reset button. I think on my Linksys router, I have a little hole that says reset. If you have this, you'll need to use a paper clip or something to reset it. I hope this helps.

Rock on and God bless...

yah those reset buttons can work wonders sometimes.

but if not - sorry. same thing happened to my girlfriend's computer last year - just zapped the modem right out of it.

and to make things worse, just a few weeks ago, the computer was on a table next to an open window when a big rainstorm came and swamped it. It probably would have been okay if it was off - but it was "sleeping". Now the machine's totally gone.

Been down that road. Last year a lightning strike took out the phone line circuit on my surge protector, skipped the DSL modem, nailed my Linksys router and the LAN card in one PC. Replaced all that and bought a better surge protector. Last month a lightning strike took out the phone line circuit on the surge protector again but everything else survived.

I feel for ya' man. Out of my ignorance for computers and such, I bought the best (most expensive) surge protector that Wally world had to offer. Just out of curiosity, what kind of surge protector were you using? Now I'm paranoid about how well protected I am after reading this.
