Mandrel bend questions
I'm going to start some work on my daily driver to make the drive to work a little more fun. The engine is a 3100 SFI V6 (I know, it's not a hot rod, but what's guy to do?). The first thing that needs to be done is the exhaust. I've heard sound clips of guys with my engine using Flowmaster 40 series and I think they sound pretty good. A deeper, louder tone but not ricey at all.
Here's the set up I'm looking at: high-flow Catco catalytic converter, 2.25" piping, a Flowmaster 40 series muffler. I may put a glasspack on to drop the sound more (don't want to scare the kids when they ride with me!!! :) ).
The question is, are mandrel bends going to be worth the extra money for me? The stock piping is 1 7/8" or 2" or something like that with the stock crimp bends. The motor isn't going to be highly modded but it's going to have a little bit of work done to it.
Any comments will be appreciated.

If you are going with duals, I would say no. If a single, it could be worth it, since after bending that 2.25 with a standard bender is will be 2" or smaller in diameter.

It will be a single system. I'm just not sure that the gains I see from a mandrel vs. crimp exhaust will be worth the extra cash spent. Plus, I'm not even sure that anyone in my area has the know-how/capabilities. I'll check around and see though. All I know is that it will be cheaper to do an aftermarket than to run OEM stuff! :D

I would just have regular 2.5 inch tubing bent up and consider that equal to mandrel bent 2.25 inch.

Why not just call JEG'S or SUMMIT and see if a manufacturer such as FOLWMASTER or DYNOMAX makes a cat back system for your car?

They will have all the Master Catalogs.

And there is nothing wrong with discussing your V6 here as I bet it will tear up a lot of older V8's if prepped correctly.

The engine is actually in a 1995 Buick Skylark which is based on the same platform (N-Body) that Grand Am's are. I still don't think that anybody makes a bolt on exhaust though. Maybe for the newer models, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to get a custom job done.
