RPM intake and Q-Jet, or any other carb that I know of, will not fit under a stock hood when using the stock air cleaner.

I use an RPM and Q-Jet with an aftermarket drop base air cleaner, in order to close the hood on my '76 'vette.

I've been looking at intakes myself the past few weeks. Most manufacturers have the height dimensions on their websites. I found that the Edelbrock Torker is 3.05" in the front and 4.6" in the back and it even notes that it fits under corvette hoods (that's for a big block) any other ones I have found are easily an inch taller.

The single plane low rise torquer 2, streetmaster , or x elerator, is nice with a cam about .440-.460 lift. The mid range is amped, and the peak band raises about 500 rpm. The low end will soften. Counter that with a light stall or 4 speed it might be perfered or even unoticed.
