Dude! Pay attention and think about it. Somebody already told you "D" would be 3rd gear. Obviously, "S" and "L" would be 1st and 2nd gear. Just because they don't have a 1 or a 2 on the console plate doesn't change the function of the transmission!

I don't do transmissions as you can tell. I can fix any problem with any engine but when it comes to transmissions i have no clue. I just wanted to make sure i wouldn't mess anything up.

Yes, we can tell. no problem, that's why hotrodders.com is here. When I was young and starting out I was tranny stupid. That's why I had to get mine re-built 2 times. Let me clue you though, with your intrest in rodding the engine, and shifting manual, get yourself a shift improver kit such as B&M. They aren't that much (about 40 bucks) and have it installed in "street/ strip" mode.
It shouldn't cast that much to have it installed and you will love the added firm shift's. You can also use your stock shifter you have now which you can either shift manual or leave it in drive. Believe me, once you get it in there, you'll never be happy with a stock tranny again knowing the performance your loosing out on. Good luck with your car.

Thanks. I was thinking of putting a manual tranny in it but i figured that it was too much to spend right now so i'll stick with a shift kit maybe. One day i'll have the money for a manual.

I put a B&M kit in my Jeep and it significantly improved the firmness of the shifts, and if you had the money I would put a Hurst ratcheting shifter makes things kinda fun as you slam through the gears. I think that would accomplish what your going for...

and this shifter will also make it impossible (or so we hope) from accidentally slamming it into reverse or neutral,
