Manual Steering Lube?
 

I have a 65 Vette with manual steering.
GM no longer provides the lube for this gearbox.
What are you guys using in manual steering gearboxes?
Some people say 80-90 gear oil but that leaks out at the lower seal. (maybe the seal?), another guy says he uses "special" high temp grease. Should I pack with wheel bearing grease? The box is a little close to the headers so it probably gets hot. Gear oil just seems to thin to me. There is a little plug on the top side of the box's cover that says "lube". It will be kinda tough to get grease in there but maybe I could pump it in with a fitting.

What you all think?

I've always packed them with wheel bearing grease and had no problems. If the headers are really close you could use high temp grease to be on the safe side.:thumbup:

I have the same questions, but it's for a 1959 Chevy Apache 3100. The truck has a big block and the manifolds are real close. 80-90 would be way too thin.

What type of grease would you guys recommend.
