Manual Steering Lube?
I have a 65 Vette with manual steering.
GM no longer provides the lube for this gearbox. What are you guys using in manual steering gearboxes? Some people say 80-90 gear oil but that leaks out at the lower seal. (maybe the seal?), another guy says he uses "special" high temp grease. Should I pack with wheel bearing grease? The box is a little close to the headers so it probably gets hot. Gear oil just seems to thin to me. There is a little plug on the top side of the box's cover that says "lube". It will be kinda tough to get grease in there but maybe I could pump it in with a fitting. What you all think? |
I've always packed them with wheel bearing grease and had no problems. If the headers are really close you could use high temp grease to be on the safe side.

I have the same questions, but it's for a 1959 Chevy Apache 3100. The truck has a big block and the manifolds are real close. 80-90 would be way too thin.
What type of grease would you guys recommend. |
