Manualy operated kickdown pedal idea.
So I just got through installing a Weland manifold and two barrel holley on my dodge W150 with a 318 motor and NP203 tranny. Now, due to the fact that the Action Plus manifold places the carb a few inches higher, the stock kickdown linkage is to short to reach the side of the carb. I was thinking of all the ways to elongate it to fit when I came up with this idea:
Connect some kind of pull cable (throttle cable, mountain bike brake cable, twine, etc) to the lever on the tranny, and the other end to a small pedal about where a clutch would be.
This would theoretically give me infinite control over when it downshifts, right? Is there some key piece of information about kickdowns that I am missing here, or would this work flawlessly?
Almost anything can be done, the question is: Is it worth it. I your case it's not really worth the trouble. You'd be far better of adding a piece to the linkage and forget about it. :thumbup:
The biggest problem with this idea is that the kickdown (aka throttle valve ) linkage does not just trigger kick down. It's position is also one of the things that regulates part throttle upshift points and fluid pressures. A tranny without a properly connected and adjusted KD linkage will burn itself up in short order.
