Marine 454 MPI intake not matching bolt pattern on new heads

I put a new set of Iron Eagle 308 heads on my Mercury 454 MPI. After the heads were on I started to bolt up the intake. That's when I realized the were only 12 mounting holes on the heads. The intake has 16, the extra 4 are in the center top of the intake ports. I went back to the shop and talked to one of the tech's who told me to drill and tap the holes. I'm not sure what to do, the area where the hole needs to be is not that thick maybe 3/8 at best. I'm thinking if I drill and tap the 4 hole and it doesn't work out there goes the warranty. Can I get away with 12 bolts or should I see if they will exchange them for the correct ones.

never settle for somthing half assed. i have drilled heads for a hilborn injection system, but they were not bran new heads. i would advise to get a new intake, if the heads are already bolted down. if there not torqued, go ahead and try to exchange the heads.

Thanks for the helpful info. The heads are all ready torqued. The intake is a multi port fuel injected and for marine applications there expansive. I was hoping to to be able to use the same intake.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... Is this a Mercruiser Mpi yer usin',..??

If so, what Vintage,..??
got any pictures,..??
maybe the serial number of the donor motor,..??
I'm guessin' it might be a generational issue in the BBC's history,...
I just don't do that much with big blocks to remember it all...
I do know the small blocks have several different intake bolt patterns,...

I googled yer new heads, 'n see no mention of this issue,...

The extra four bolts are not used on many aftermkt heads/intake manifolds. . Leave the heads alone and fill the extra manifold holes with epoxy..Not a problem in a boat..

Does the manifold base look like this one and have ASM cast into the back?
