Markings on a sbc 3970010 block

My new post is what are the raised bumps on some of the engines next to the block casting numbers; a circular pattern of ten dots with a pointer (looks like an arrowhead in the middle of the circle). On the left side of the circle of dots is a number 3 and the arrowhead symbol on the inside of the circle points to it. On the right side - outside of the circle is a letter N and to the right of it and up is a raised O with a V stamped in the O, and then below that is another symbol that looks like a large "a" not capital A. These last three form a triangular grouping located to the right of the circle of dots which are to the right of the casting number. I have this on one of my 3970010 with a H287 build date. Any ideas. I also see a lot of blocks with 38GM, or GM51 or 5TGM or 5.0 GM. The one I can't identify is 38GM. Any ideas?

These are date stamps put on by the engine factory to identify shift, core changes, modifications etc.

Thanx, any source where I can find what it describes. For instance, if a mod was made.
