After installing an HEI distributor on my small block 350, I started the car and it ran just fine. After allowing it to run for some time, I noticed a large amount of oil pooling underneath the car. I initially thought the oil pain gasket was bad, but I never had the issue before.
I then started the next day and it was like an oil explosion happened on the engine block. I'm thinking it is coming from the intake.
Can someone point me in the right direction here. The distributor seated correctly and was flush when I put it in. Any ideas where this oil is coming from?

not to be smart but did you install the gasket between the dist and the intake??

and that was the only thing you replaced?? Did the dist seat all the way down to the intake??

I may need to take another look at it. It appeared to be seated correctly.

if it doesn't sit in the oil pump shaft correctly it can hold it up about a 1/16". Do you have a oil pressure gauge? the line for it is next to the dist on the driver side. could have cracked the tube or broken a fitting. If you just replaced the dist and didn't have a leak prior its got to be one of those two.

Appreciate the insight. Definitely gonna go take a look at it.

that looks like the MSD street fire?? can you see where the oil is coming from while its running?

Try a search on your problem.I seem to remember a thread about certain distributors,or,maybe it was certain blocks that use an O ring on the shaft to seal.It may have been on a different application tho.Just sounds familiar.

It is. Dude I'm paranoid to turn it on again. It literally dumped about 4 gallons of oil out. When I saw my oil gage drop to zero I knew there was a problem.
I have after market gauges so the line for that may have ruptured like you said.

mine did all over my carpet. I now use the copper tubing kit instead of the crap hose that comes with it. I lost about a quart of oil on my newly installed carpet. I first noticed the gauge go to zero while driving down the road then I notice the oil everywhere on the floor grabbed the hose and folded it over to get home. It has to be that line I cant think of any thing else it could be.

Never mind my previous post.I found the thread & it was on another forum.A guy added an O ring to try to seal a cheap offshore intake he had bought. It didn't work very well tho.The problem sounded familiar.I couldn't remember the app tho.

ok i have to jump on this one : normal oil amount in motor 5 to 6 Quarts., maybe 4 gallons of oil is a tad to much. LOL.

Sounds like you damaged the oil line/sending unit on the back of the block, driver side right beside the distributor.
