matching numbers

This is probably the most basic question to ask you guys..
If i have a 1970 mustang, and its supposed to have a 302 in it.. How do i tell if they are matching numbers or not between the engine and car???
Ive never known and niether do any of my friends...

I would look for specifics on a Mustang site...this is a very general question but you will need ford/mustang guys to help you.

You can't be 100% sure on a Ford of that era. They did not include the vehicle VIN on the engine, like GM did. You would have to check the casting dates on the engine, they should be somewhere in the few months prior to the vehicles assembly date. The engine could be replaced with one of the proper build date and you would not know the difference.
