matt stripes,paint or decal

I have an 03 Mach1 that is a daily driver, show car, and makes regular trips to the 1/8th mile strip.
Over the winter I plan on repairing a few minor body flaws
namely the dealer that had it apparently detailed it with
a power buffer and tore up the edges of the side stripes,
and a few suicidal bugs have left their mark on my hood stripe.
Being more mechanical than body oriented, I'm wonder whether
to replace the decals or have them painted on?
Also what happens to Flat black stripes if you clear coat over them?
