Definitely .030 or .040. Most will take 60-over, but any more I would sonic check the bores for core shift.

The first 396 was like 4.094 std bore a couple years later 4.125 was std bore, they make .030 - .040 - .060 over for them, I have punched them to .060 over with no problems.

Early 4-bolt blocks will go 4.250. I have even run one of these at +.030 over that. But you have to have a good block. Get it sonic checked.

G'day bopedersen,
BOBCRMAN is correct, 396 blocks can be bored to 4.250". I have a L34 spec 402 (2 bolt ) out of a 1970 Monte Carlo which was bored out a couple of years ago to 427 with no problems. In fact the motor had already been bored .060" over 4.125" for a size at that time of roughly 412/413.

I did quite a bit of research on the subject before getting it bored out and it appears that it was a common "operation" back in the late 60's before 427's where more readily available. From my research it also appears that the 396 and 427 blocks (passenger car blocks not high deck truck blocks) of that era come off the same castings and the only difference was the factory boring. Ditto for 4 bolt blocks.

Core shift was not too much of a problem in Mk. IV Chev. blocks up to the early 70's. Later it maybe an issue. With your 396 if you are unsure then get it sonic tested as suggested.

A side benefit I found by getting it bored out is that it has all but eliminated overheating problems that I was having with the 402. Before, on hot days and nights stuck in slow stop and go traffic the temp. would regularly get to 240 F. and that was with a 15lb cap !. I was always blowing head gaskets. One summer season I replaced 3 sets of head gaskets. Now it struggles to get to 210F. and I haven't replaced a head gasket in 3 years (touch wood ), a great improvement.

Cheers...........Barry.
