depends on what is in the motor
stock is around 5700- 6200
my 406 with titanum rods and rev kit and crank girdle is rated at over 10 grand.
V-8s sound great at that rpm

It depends on the stroke, you can't have too much piston speed. Then you also have to control valve float. I have seen 302s with after market rods go way past 10 grand.

I would limit the rpms to 6500 rpm for a 2 bolt, cast crank, cast piston, stock rod 350.

I have seen an autozone 350 short block dragged raced every week for 2 years using 6500 rpm shift points. Furthermore the engine was consuming 10 pounds on N20 every week.

Of course, 6500 rpm requires good heads, intake, cam, exhaust, gears, and high rpm stall converter.

6500 RPM with cast pistons ? wow. I wouldnt be that brave. Id keep a cast crank, cast piston, stock rod small block @ 5500 RPMs...6000 would be really pushing it in my opinion. John

If the parts are in good condition and balanced correctly; 7000-7500 is safe
for a 3.48" stroke. Good rod bolts are recommended.

Sorry guys, didn't give enough details, I was in a hurry. It's a 350 4 bolt main block, cast crank, original rods, hypereutectic pistons. The motor is in a good shape ( less than 5000 miles on it). It did rev over 6000 rpm briefly, unloaded, the transmission flared between shifts. On the valvetrain side, I don't really worry about float, I also don't expect going over 6500RPM.

You should have no problems with 6500 rpm.

With lightweight GM pink rods, light weight Wiseco pistons, h bearings, and stock cranks, we wind 350's up to 8000+ rpm...with a two barrel carb.

This is with stock diameter springs (per class rules) that only have 345# of pressure at .510 lift.

You will have no problems at 6000 or even 6500 and if you do then just do a spring upgrade.

Once your motor starts to loosen up though you could see some problems. If your rod bearing clearances are too loose it will mulitply the amount of force being applied to the rod and you will probably break the rods.

With decent hypers and stock rods with good bolts 7200 short burst will last. We have one built in 95 355cid, stock rods good bolts, shotpeened the rods, trw lightwieght pistons, cast crank that has hit 9000 many times dirt tracking still going with a couple freshens altho she is starting to show her age. The valve train is the biggest cause of failure at high rpm it has to be perfect once you get much past 7000 rpm geometry, spring rates good parts etc. You get everything right and they will stay together. Also if given a choice between a stock cast crank and so called cast steel cranks such as scats and eagles the stocker is far better. Just doesn't have the advertising dollars behind it"magazines".In many cases I have found a stock cast crank is better than eagle or other offshore forged cranks providing far better durability.

I agree. I run my cast crank, hyper piston, arp rod bolt, 11:1 cr, 350 up to 7200 pms for short burst. When the valve float, I shift it.
