me and my 283

I'm getting ready to fire up my sbc 283 after sitting for 12 months or so. Before doing this I think I would like to replace the old style crank pulley mounting plate with a harmonic dampener.

My question is the current crank shaft is not threaded. Therefore I can not secure the dampener with a bolt. Will this present any more of a problem than I have now with the pressed on steel pulley mount plate? With the engine in the car it would be difficult to drill and tap the end of the crank. This is a daily driver it won't get pushed very often.

also any suggestions on pre-setup of the engine prior to cranking would be appreciated.

thanks!

I wouldn't try to use a newer style balancer without a bolt.

There's no way you will be able to drill a hole with the engine in the car. The hole should be drilled by a machinist.

I would use the old balancer unless it has defects.
