I have narrowed a 9in housing for my 86 mustang with a 514ci big block. I have the center section done. I am not clear on how to measure the axel length for my housing so I can order.
Who do you plan to order your axles from? I got a set of custom made axles for my narrowed '56 Olds rear end in my Willys from Moser and they have a very detailed order from on which you note virtually every dimension you want on your new axles. I would think all the other big axle guys would have a similar form 'cause mistakes can be costly! Check with you preferred supplier and they can set you up with the info they need.
Their is 6 ways to accurately measure for the proper axle with the existing housing. A)Housing flange to flange. B)Driver side housing flange to pinion center. C)Passenger side housing flange to pinion center. D)Axle flange to axle flange width. F)Axle flange (drivers side) to pinion center. E)Axle flange (passenger side) to pinion center.
Also measure the distance between the outside of both housing flanges (A)(backing plate attachment point). Not all pinions are centered, so it is also essential to measure the distance from the housing falnge ti the center of the pinion (or U-joint) on both driver and passenger side (B & C).
