I know what backspacing is and how to measure for it on existing wheels, but how do I measure for backspacing without wheels that already fit. I've seen articles on this in CHevy highporfamence and Car Craft, but i lost those issues. I have an 84 monte carlo and i believe my old centerlines had about 3.5" of backspacing. The reason i'm getting new wheels and don't have my old ones to reference from is become some lowlife jerkoff stole mine. Nothing hurts more than having your car violated. any way thanks for the help.

Jack your vehicle up and support it with a good jackstand. Remove the wheel. Place a straightedge against the brakedrum. Measure from the inner edge of the straightedge to the inner fenderwell or anything that the wheel/tire might rub. Example: rubber snubber, shock, etc. Subtract 1" from the measurement. That will be the MAXIMUM backspacing you can use. To figure out how wide a rim you can use: measure from the inner edge of the straightedge to the inner edge of the fender and subtract 1". Add this figure to the one you got for the backspacing and you will know how wide a rim you can fit in the wheelwell.

Thanks for the reply. I hope is measure correctly so I can get the right wheels. I'm replacing the auto drags with the telstars. I will never park my car in an alley next to bar again.
