mechanical fuel pump Problem
 
Hello. I have a chevy 350, that I cannot get to pump fuel. i've installed 3 fuel pumps in it, (about to try the 4th) and it will not pump fuel. I know i've installed them correctly with the push rod up. I've tried just running a line to a gas can on the last one, but no luck. could it be my cam? really baffled!!!! trying to stay with a mechanical, but am ready to go electric. If i go that route does anyone know about (Holley red)? Thanks

Remove the fuel pump and remove the fuel pump mounting plate. Remove the fuel pump rod and inspect it for excessive wear or damage. If it checks out okay, reinstall, disconnect the hot wire going to the distributor, and have a buddy bump the engine over while you keep your finger on the fuel pump push rod, If the lobe on the cam is still good you'll feel the movement of the rod. If the rod has little movement then the lobe on the cam is history.
When you find the issue and your ready to reassemble remember to lube the spring cavity of the fuel pump with cherry or moly lube before installing.

Sounds like the fuel pump cam lobe. Of course, check the plunger rod first to eliminate that as a cause. They are a relatively simple set up, so it can only be one of those two things...unless you are misfortunate enough to have purchased that many defective fuel pumps...doubtful! Make sure your lines aren't run backwards somehow or you'll be trying to pump fuel out of the carb into the tank.

X2 on checking the lines are correct. My son and I did just that when firing up his 350. Stumped us for a few minutes!
