Mechanical speedo conversion on 200r4?
I picked up a 200r4 out of a '90 Caddy that I need to put in my '83 Olds. I want to convert the electronic speedo connection this has to mechanical. I know there's a kit out there but I'd rather do it the right way since the trans is out.
From what I've read the pan needs to come off and the governor needs to come out. From there I'm not sure what's involved or if there's more to it. I also don't know what gears I'd need for the stock 2.73 rear. Wish it was as easy as just removing the connector and putting the "bullet" in for the mechanical. |

im assuming at this point so i may be wrong. if its like a 4l60e( electronic 700r4) u will just need to remove tail housing and remove reluctor wheel off of tail shaft. then get proper gear from another 200r4 for manual speedo and put back on tailshaft. you may have to change tail housing to manual one. im not sure. but most parts should be readily available at salvage yards considering these trannies came in almost all metric cars built.. hope that helps

Every 200-4R I've ever seen had a mechanical speedo drive. The VSS on these cars was in the speedo head itself. You might want two verify what type of trans you actually got.

It does in fact have the electronic and I know it's not the VSS. It installs the same way the speedo bullet would and actually looks like a direct swap now that I took it apart. Just need to put in a bullet with a 26 tooth gear. '90-92 were the years Caddy went with the digital speedometer and no the tail housing isn't removable.

I'm running two 200r4's and both are mechanical with shift cable at the carb.
